According to statistics, 108 people were killed in the explosion. Among them, the oldest is 86 years old and the youngest is only 6 months old.
According to the order of the explosion, the first two explosions occurred in the No.15 and No.16 dormitory buildings of No.3 Cotton Spinning Factory in the city. The west wall of Building 15 was blown down, but fortunately there were no casualties. But building 16 was far worse. the third case, five people were killed and 20 injured in the No.1 building of the dormitory of the Municipal Construction No.1 Company, which was only a dozen meters away from the security post where Li Yishan was on night duty.
The fourth explosion occurred in the dormitory building of the city hardware company at No.13 Dian Street, Xinhua District. Unit 1 was blown down, killing 10 people and injuring 6 others. The
fifth explosion occurred in a residential building at No.12 Minjin Street, Yuhua Road, Qiaodong District, but fortunately no casualties were caused.
This is the biggest serial bombing since the founding of the People’s Republic of China! Who on earth, with what kind of deep hatred, killed so many people overnight? Readers who have
read the Zhang Baolin case mentioned earlier in our column all know that the social order in Shijiazhuang was relatively poor at that time, and it was called one of the “top ten terror cities in the country” by some media. It was because the underworld was rampant here, and there were often fires between gangs, so some people speculated that the explosion was related to the revenge of a certain gang. The
five explosions occurred between 4:16 a.m. and 5:01 a.m., detonating five residential buildings in different locations in a short period of 45 minutes. It is very likely that the crime was committed by a gang, and judging from the power of the explosion, it was at least several hundred kilograms of explosives. Just a few hours after the
explosion, when people were still in shock, the special command had initially locked the criminal suspect, not a gang crime, but a single crime! This person lived in Room 201, Unit 2, Building 16 of No.3 Cotton Spinning Factory, which also suffered from the explosion!
The man had a criminal record, had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape, and was released early in 1997, so he was the focus of the local police station.
Not long ago, the local public security Bureau had just received a joint investigation notice from the public security Bureau of Maguan County, Yunnan Province, informing him that he was suspected of a vicious homicide case and hoped to assist in the investigation.
But this person is not in line with people’s imagination of the bombing gang, because this person is not a triad, and he has no friends. Because this person was deaf when he was young because of illness, he could speak, but his speech was slurred, and if others wanted to communicate with him, they could only rely on writing. Moreover, this person is extreme in doing things, and is hostile to people everywhere. His family members have been killed by him, and they are afraid to avoid him. What kind of person would associate with him and commit a crime with him if he is ruthless and has no money?
However, through further investigation, the task force found that the five explosion sites were inextricably linked to this person.
In the family courtyard of No.3 Cotton Spinning Factory, the collapsed No.16 Building was his own residence, and he had not been seen for many days by the time of the incident; the No.15 Building next to it was the residence of his father and stepmother; there was his ex-wife’s house in the dormitory building of No.1 Municipal Construction Company, where her parents, son, and younger brother’s family were living at that time; The dormitory building of the city hardware company in Dian Street is the residence of her ex-wife and her current husband; in the residential building at No.12 Minjin Street, there is a house formerly owned by his biological mother, which was sold a year ago, and he is said to have threatened to kill his sisters for unfair distribution of money.
Then, a neighbor provided another important clue: the man had a lot of research on explosion. Just before he was imprisoned for rape, he had made explosives at home and experimented with explosion on the sand pile outside the construction site, which made a big hole. All of
the above clues are quite convincing, and the suspicion of this person has risen sharply. Just eight hours after the explosion, the task force issued an A-level arrest warrant to the whole country. The name of
Jin Ruchao has been known by people since then.
Of course, Class A warrants don’t just happen. In order to confirm the possibility of Jin Ruchao committing the crime, the special task force carried out work in many aspects.
In order to prevent the occurrence of deception, the criminal police need to determine the specific location of each person at the scene of the crime, the furniture in the room, and draw a map to record.
Forensic doctors are also busy conducting autopsies on the victims to confirm the identity of each victim and whether the cause of death is due to the collapse caused by the explosion or other causes. Professionals in
charge of site investigation need to find out the location of each site, calculate the weight of explosives, and separate the components of explosives.
In the ruins of the No.16 building of the No.3 Cotton Spinning Factory, the police found an important clue: a “Chemical Manual”, which is full of information about the deployment of explosives. There is also a clipping of the Yanzhao Metropolis Daily on August 26, 1999, which contains such a news that a villager was criminally detained for buying homemade explosives from a villager named Wang in Beibaisha Village. And this building is where Jin Ruchao lives. Police officers
conducting peripheral investigations made detailed interviews with potential witnesses, such as cleaners, morning exercisers, taxi drivers and breakfast vendors.
The special task force also specially deployed police forces to investigate the personnel engaged in the manufacture and sale of explosives, detonators, and other contraband goods in the surrounding areas.
Most importantly, the task force needs to determine whether it is possible for a single person to carry out five bombings in 45 minutes. According to the location of the explosion point obtained from the scene investigation, the special task force conducted a simulation experiment on the spot.
Assuming that the suspect had transported the explosives and hidden them near the explosion site in advance, he only needed to put the explosives in place, insert the detonator fuse, and then ignite them on the night of the 16th. In this way, the time required to commit a crime is greatly shortened.
Through on-the-spot calculation, the total distance of the five scenes is 15 kilometers, the driving time is 22 minutes, the preliminary estimate of the crime time is about 14 minutes, plus walking time, the total time is about 44 minutes.
The first explosion occurred at 4:16, and the last explosion occurred at 5:01. The simulation experiment was only one minute away from the actual explosion, so it was possible for a single person to commit the crime.
The special task force did not dare to relax and continued to visit Jin Ruchao’s relatives, including family members and former inmates. As a result, as expected, Jin Ruchao’s relationship with everyone was particularly tense.Everyone avoided him, and his fellow inmates gave him a very poor evaluation.Everyone agreed that with Jin Ruchao’s character, it was impossible to find his accomplice in the crime, and no one would help him hide. March, after it was basically confirmed that Jin Ruchao was the criminal suspect in the explosion, the news media in Shijiazhuang began to collect clues to the case while issuing a wanted notice. Soon, all kinds of information continued to come together, and Jin Ruchao’s own track of action a few days before the incident gradually emerged. One of the most valuable clues was obtained on the morning of the 18th. Zhang Juntao, an individual transport driver in Nanbaisha Village, Licun Town
, Luquan District, recalled that on the morning of the 15th, a middle-aged man with a lisp had rented his Futian van and pulled more than a dozen bags of chicken feed from an abandoned chemical plant in Beibaisha Village. Originally agreed to pull to the outskirts of Shijiazhuang, Chen Village, freight 40 yuan, but the man suddenly changed his mind halfway, said only 30, Zhang Juntao was so angry that he unloaded the goods halfway, asked for 20 yuan and left.
Because the man’s ears were not good, Zhang Juntao always had to shout loudly when he spoke, so he was deeply impressed. After seeing the wanted notice, he felt that many characteristics were consistent with that person, so he rushed to the police station to report the case. After
finding the suspected source of the explosives, the police immediately sent people to Beibaisha Village and found the abandoned chemical plant. A large amount of sulfur, ammonia and other items used to make explosives were found in the factory building. It can be seen that the chicken feed was actually homemade explosives, but it was packed in woven bags of chicken feed to deceive people. In the
afternoon of the same day, Wang Yushun, who made explosives privately, was arrested. After identifying the photos, Wang Yushun confirmed that it was Jin Ruchao who came to buy the explosives.
Wang Yushun, male, 50 years old, a native of Beibaisha village, began to manufacture ammonium nitrate explosives in partnership with Hao Fengqin, a villager from the same village, and sold them to many people in March 2000. By the time of the incident, they had sold 24050 kilograms, of which 550 kilograms were sold to Jin Ruchao!
According to Wang Yushun’s recollections, Jin Ruchao came to see him in May last year. At that time, the Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported that someone had been detained for buying explosives from him. After Jin Ruchao saw it, he inquired all the way to find him.
Wang Yushun said that Jin Ruchao had very high requirements for explosives, which must be powerful enough.Therefore, after Wang Yushun sold him five kilograms of relatively less powerful raw ammonium nitrate explosives for the first time, Jin Ruchao was not satisfied with the results and did not contact him again afterwards. On 12 March
this year, Jin Ruchao found Wang Yushun again and communicated with him with a pen and paper, saying that he wanted to buy 500 kilograms of explosives, but the power must be greater than last time, so Wang Yushun and Hao Fengqin provided him with more powerful cooked ammonium nitrate explosives, and the two sides negotiated the deal.

the 14th, Jin Ruchao came to the factory to look at the goods and then paid Hao Fengqin more than 900 yuan, but he made a strange request. He asked Wang Yushun and Hao Fengqin to give him the key to the warehouse, not to see the person who pulled the goods, and after he pulled the goods away, he would hide the key under a stone slab at the door. Wang and Hao agreed.
As for what Jin Ruchao did with the explosives, Wang and Hao didn’t care at all. On the afternoon of
the 16th, that is, the day of the explosion, when Wang Yushun came to the warehouse again, he found that the explosives had disappeared and the key was placed under the stone slab at the door. He thought that the business had been successfully completed and did not think much about it. Wang Yushun’s educational level was not high, he did not care about national affairs, and he did not read books and newspapers, so he did not see the wanted notice at all in nearly two days.
But unlike Hao Fengqin, who co-produced explosives with him, she graduated from high school and was the most highly educated of the participants in the case. On the afternoon of the 17th, Hao Fengqin saw the wanted notice while reading the newspaper and immediately recognized Jin Ruchao. Knowing that she could not get rid of it, she immediately ran to the orchard outside the village to hide for two nights until she was captured when she returned home for dinner in the early morning of the 20th.

went through various technical tests and found that the residues of explosives found at the five explosion sites were exactly the same as the ingredients of the homemade explosives made by Wang and Hao. Moreover, the handwriting left by the people who came to buy explosives when communicating with Wang and Hao was exactly the same as Jin Ruchao’s handwriting. It can be confirmed once again that Wang and Hao sold the explosives to Jin Ruchao. Jin then blew up five more residential buildings. On the morning of 19 March, the day after
Wang Yushun was arrested, Wang Xiangdong, a villager of Jia Village in Dahe Town, contacted the police. According to his recollection, he once helped a man who looked like Jin Ruchao pull chicken feed.
It was on the morning of March 15 that he drove a farm motor tricycle near Dubei Bridge and met Liu Xuehai from the same village. Liu Xuehai’s motor tricycle was pulling some chicken feed and a middle-aged man on it. Because Liu Xuehai’s car could not enter the city of Shijiazhuang without a license plate, he asked Wang Xiangdong to finish the work for him. Wang Xiangdong and the middle-aged man talked about the price and moved the chicken feed to his car, and then pulled it to an abandoned house in the west of Qiantaibao Village in the suburbs of Shijiazhuang.
The police found Liu Xuehai and confirmed what Wang Xiangdong said. He was the second person to pull chicken feed for Jin Ruchao after Zhang Juntao. Therefore, the three car owners all identified that all the characteristics of the person who asked them to pull the goods were consistent with Jin Ruchao. In addition, the provenance of the goods was Wang Yushun’s warehouse, so it was certain. The dozen bags of chicken feed that the three of them had transported were actually Wang Yushun and Hao Fengqin’s homemade explosives, and this chain of evidence was complete.
However, Jin Ruchao took cover after the explosion. Where on earth did he go?
According to the calculation, the explosives he bought were not used up. With so many dangerous goods in his hands, would he go to other places to commit crimes? The special task force inevitably became nervous, and they had to race against time to arrest and bring Jin Ruchao to justice. On
20 March, the special task force suggested to the Ministry of Public Security that, considering that Jin Ruchao had probably fled Shijiazhuang, it should apply for launching a nationwide search for Jin Ruchao on the basis of the A-level arrest warrant.
Three days later, on 23 March, news came from Guangxi that Jin Ruchao had been captured near a village called Juntun Village. The special task force immediately dispatched an escort team to escort Jin Ruchao back to Shijiazhuang. In December
1960, Jin Ruchao was born in an ordinary worker’s family in Shijiazhuang. At the age of 8, he suffered from otitis media caused by high fever, and soon lost hearing in both ears, leaving only a little hearing. From then on, Jin Ruchao, who
had almost lost his hearing, was often bullied by other children. He became lonely and irascible, and refused to communicate with others. He was immersed in his own world every day, and people around him nicknamed him “Jin Deaf.”.
Because he was deaf and his family was poor, Jin Ruchao did not continue to go to school after graduating from junior high school. He worked as a worker in the No.3 Cotton Spinning Factory. Later, he burned boilers and worked as a porter.

Once when his wife went to visit him in prison, a fellow inmate poured her a glass of water, and Jin Ruchao thought that there was an improper relationship between this fellow inmate and his wife, and he had to kill him. In order to settle the matter, the prison had to transfer Jin Ruchao to Shenzhou Prison. During the years in
prison, Jin Ruchao did not repent at all and sank deeper and deeper into his imaginary world. During the eight years from 1988 to 1997, he wrote tens of thousands of words in his diary. Said to be a diary, there is not much record of daily life, almost all of which is his vent of dissatisfaction with life and speculation about people around him.
For his deafness, he thought that his family was afraid of spending money and did not give him a good treatment, which was caused by streptomycin. Later, he never looked for reasons for all the disappointments he encountered. Instead, he blamed them all on others.
