What do you need to remember in IELTS listening vocabulary? -Zhihu (1)

What do you need to remember

in IELTS listening vocabulary?

As a teacher who has taught IELTS for more than ten years, I would like to share with you some scoring skills according to each Section of the listening questions.

Section 1 The IELTS listening test is getting more and more difficult from Section 1 to Section 4.

This means that Section 1 is the simplest.

You may think that since Seciton1 is the easiest, I won’t learn it first.

Big mistake. We should solve the simple problems first, and then tackle the difficult ones. When

solving simple problems, the ability is improved.

And remember the basic content that will also appear in the problem, and then when you do the problem, you only need to solve the really difficult part. Before we

get started with Section 1, we need to look at the question types. In Section 1 of the

2018 IELTS listening test, all the questions are filled in the blanks. The most common questions are table, notes, and form personal information.

Please recall what is the main form of the scene in Section 1?

Yes, it’s in the life scene, and it’s all the life consulting scene.

As for Section 1, we should not only accumulate the basic vocabulary of life scenes, but also understand the basic knowledge of daily life.

Encoding information: Keep in mind the specific format. Since you are consulting, you will record and ask for basic personal information.

We must not ignore the “coded information” in it. What does the

encoded information contain?

You can include the telephone number, which is the phone number, and the passportnumber flightnumber postcode. Postcode, which is the zip code. A

flight number means a flight number. Why do

I emphasize these two “coded messages”?

Because their formats are special and regular, you need to keep them in mind.

The first is postcode. It has three basic formats. The first format is all numbers. You can write numbers when you listen to the recording.

Second, two letters at the beginning, two numbers in the middle and two letters at the end.

Third, two letters at the beginning, three numbers in the middle and two letters at the end.

Please listen to the first group of messages: CR02YR. Two letters at the beginning, two numbers in the middle and two letters at the end.

If I knew the format of the postcode beforehand, I would have expected it.

Now for the next format.

DN69AC. This is the form of two letters at the beginning and two letters at the end, and three numbers in the middle. All of

the above are the forms and structures of foreign postal codes.

If you mention the postcode, you suddenly think of the number according to the domestic life experience, and suddenly hear a C at the beginning, it is a letter, it must be a blank brain, will be dull for a second or two.

In a second or two, he may have finished reading the string of codes.

So please be sure to know the basic information in advance and keep their format in mind.

Okay, that’s the zip code. Let’s look at the flight number. Most flight numbers are two letters at the beginning and three or four numbers at the end.

For example, if you feel very confused, it means that you don’t know much about continuous reading. What

I just read is not the letter W, but double + 0 together, which forms the form 00.

I would also like to highlight two “coded messages”, one called passportnumber and one called creditcardnumber. Both of these “coded messages” are very long.

IELTS is particularly fond of long coded information because it is easy for candidates to miss it.

So when you practice digital dictation, you must be familiar with their format, try to practice every day, at least a month, in order to ensure that there is no mistake.

Name spelling: First listen to the overall pronunciation. Next, I will talk about name spelling.

For example, I introduce myself, MynameisFiona. If you want to record my name, do you need to know the full spelling of my name, and am I obliged to spell it out and tell you?

In this process, we can separate a person’s name in the form of letters.

You may think that you can’t make mistakes in spelling letters.

That’s not necessarily true! For example, these two letters, GJ. Chinese pronunciation habits, it is easy to pronounce them as the same sound.

So how can we avoid writing letters?

Share a little trick. After

confirming the name of the person, we should first listen to the overall pronunciation of the name.

For example, someone’s name is George. Before I listen to the spelling, I’m not sure that the initial letter is G instead of J. After listening to the overall pronunciation, I can effectively avoid confusion of letters and improve the accuracy of filling in the blanks.

Time Information: Be Familiar with Positive and Negative Order Expression After talking about the legal person name code, I’m going to talk about “time information.”.

Suppose I am a real estate agent, want to call you, I will ask: When is convenient to call you?

Whattime?

When I ask about time, you should understand that it’s time to fill in the time information.

Time information is both simple and not simple.

The simplicity is that English, like Chinese, follows the positive order of expression.

The so-called positive order is the normal order.

For example, if the time is 11:14, I can say it’s 1114, which separates 11:00 and 14:00. As long as

you pay attention, the whole information can be expressed in o’clock.

For example, it’sseveno’clock, it’seighto’clock, means 7 o’clock and 8 o’clock.

Not simply, English time will also be expressed in reverse order.

The so-called reverse order is to reverse the hours and minutes.

As long as it is reversed, there must be a premise.

There is an expression called aquarterpastfive and fivetoten. When past and to appear, we can use the reverse time expression.

“past” is the past tense of “pass”. “Past” means the past. The appearance of

past means that a period of minutes has passed in an hour.

A quarter past five, what I want to express is that 15 minutes have passed in 5 o’clock, that is, 15.5 to 10 after 5 o’clock, what message does to express? The meaning of

to is arrival.

We will say, 5 minutes to 10, so 5to10 means 9:55. When you hear the reverse time expression, don’t convert it directly to the ordinary time point.

When you hear aquarterpast5 and 5to10, don’t write out the point in time directly.

You write aquarterpast5 as QP5, replace Q and P with the first letter, and write 5 directly.

5to10, just write it as 5T10.

You can record part of the content immediately. The last ten minutes of the

listening test are used to transcribe the answers, leaving you plenty of time.

Also note that some time content will emphasize the writing of am and pm.

We just need to write it in lowercase, and we don’t need to capitalize and add points.

The last common message is called date, which means date, but in this case, date means date.

We must be familiar with the 12 months in terms of meaning, pronunciation and writing.

When we hear the content of the date, it is good to abbreviate the month of record.

For example, when I hear January, I just need to record it with the three letters of Jan, and in the last ten minutes, I can write the answer, and then complete it.

These are the details that will be tested in Section 1.

We can regard Section 1 as a sub-question, because the expressions of numbers, letters, time and date are common in life and can be touched as soon as we learn English. It’s easier to

review. One

last point to emphasize.

For detailed information, first of all, we should understand and remember their basic rules, and record them as briefly as possible.

This can save time, maintain the unity of thinking, and not be distracted when doing other topics.

And let us have a better attitude to deal with the next more difficult problems.

Section2 and Section3 First, let’s look at the main content of Section2.

Both Section1 and Section2 are checking the survival type information.

So what’s the difference between Section 2 and Section 1?

First of all, let’s introduce the four high-frequency scenarios of Section2.

Section 2 questions are mainly in the form of personal monologues. In

life, there is a lot of information about personal monologues.

You can think of the broadcast of the sweet female voice that lingers in your ears when you go shopping.

She may introduce to you what kind of discount is there today, what is on the first floor and what is on the second floor.

This is a typical personal monologue of life.

So what types of questions will be tested in personal monologues?

It mainly includes single-choice questions, multiple-choice questions and matching questions.

Map questions will appear once or twice a month.

Specifically, what personal monologue scenes will be tested in the IELTS test? Introduction to

the first type of location.

For example, a tour guide introduces the scenic spots, or a theatre manager introduces the basic facilities of the theatre. Map questions often appear in the topic of

location and scene introduction.

Secondly, there are introductions of various activities.

For example, all kinds of precautions about camping, or fund-raising speeches about charity projects, as well as the introduction of the operation mode of various organizations: introduce the activity club, or our sports center, its infrastructure, if you want to join, how to go through the formalities, and so on.

In addition, we will also hear some information about the life of studying abroad.

For example, a freshman introduction meeting, that is, orientation, will hear the introduction of learning facilities, accommodation and so on.

The last category is relatively difficult. It introduces the development type of a city.

For example, a government official introduces the latest urban planning and points out how the urban facilities have been improved.

These are the common high-frequency scenarios in Section2.

You may not think it sounds as simple as Section 1, but don’t worry about it yet, because we have a way to overcome it.

Section 2 Listening Skills: Grasp the Conjunctions of Cause and Effect, Parataxis and Transition Section 2 mainly appears in the form of personal monologue.

Monologue because there is no role switching, just a person speaking, so you are more likely to be distracted.

In order not to be distracted, please do a good job of finding the positioning words accurately when you examine the topic. When

listening to the questions, follow the positioning information closely and follow the positioning words step by step to find the answer.

IELTS listening questions do not prompt when to switch.

Therefore, in addition to positioning words, we also need to use connectives, especially the connection information about causality, coordination and transition.

Next, I will introduce you to the common conjunctions of cause and effect, coordination and transition.

First, the conjunctions for cause and effect: because, so, and so, since, as Next, let’s look at the conjunctions for coordination: and, also, and also, as well as the last one is for transition.

You must pay attention to the turning type of information.

Because it often means that one of the two pieces of information may be wrong.

For example, we often hear such a turning point: I asked a girl to have dinner today, but she called me in the evening and said: I could have arrived at 6 o’clock in the evening, but I was delayed, so I could only arrive at 8 o’clock.

So what time did you two end up eating? The

correct answer should be the next eight points.

This is the role of turning type conjunctions, so what are the conjunctions that indicate turning?

Let’s listen to this: but, however, while, yet, whereas. These words are conjunctions of transitional forms. I hope you can remember them well.

Sometimes you find that some words can be used freely in reading, speaking and writing, but when it comes to listening, you feel that you can’t use them at all.

The reason is very simple, listening is too fast.

I want to emphasize two words, one is and, the other is but. These two words appear very frequently in spoken language and are often skimmed. What will the word “

and” be reduced to? “

and & # x2F; ə n & # x2F;” is such a simple sound.

You and & # x2F; ə n & # x2F; me, no one will say you and me. So please remember that and is not as easy to hear as you think. Another

is but, which is skimmed like and, which is skimmed as but & # x2F; B & # x2F;, for example, YoulovecoconutbutIdon’t. Is not butIdon’tlike. Finally, I will summarize the skills of Section 2.

You must pay attention to the accumulation of common test vocabulary and scene vocabulary in Section2. Before

doing the problem, grasp the rhythm of examining the problem and find all the key positioning information.

In order to prevent distraction when doing exercises, we should also master the conjunctions of causality, juxtaposition and transition.

Section3 Scoring Skills: Pay attention to the answer sentences after specific vocabulary. Section3 and Section4 are Academic English, academic English, and vocabulary is very difficult.

And Section 3 is basically a test of choice questions, can only be a single choice, multiple choices and matching questions, much more difficult than filling in the blanks, I hope you have to review well.

First, we need to understand what Section 3 is talking about. In

most cases, Section 3 hears a conversation between a teacher and a student, or between a student and a student, and describes a discussion about the content of the lesson.

For example, today we will have a quiz, a small test, or we will have a common test. For the content to be tested, the teacher will take you to do a tutorial. The homework is due

soon, how is your dissertation finished, how is your assignment finished, and you are going to do an individual project today, and so on.

But in the process of completion, you may need the assistance of the teacher, or the group work needs to be completed with your classmates, which is the communication and communication you will have with the teacher and your classmates.

And these forms of learning, in the domestic study, we do not have much contact.

As a result, we are relatively unfamiliar with the content of the Section 3 scenario.

This kind of strangeness can easily make it difficult for us to associate with the information we hear when we listen to the questions, which is not conducive to scoring, so you must strengthen your familiarity with such scenes. The way of

reinforcement can be perfectly solved by practicing Section 3 of IELTS listening, because the real questions show the above content very completely.

So when you do the exercises, you should pay attention to the accumulation of scene words, and you can read the original listening text properly to improve your understanding of the basic situation and ways of learning abroad.

But please remember, don’t brush the questions.

The so-called brush problem is to finish a problem, read right or wrong, put down this problem, this is not possible.

It is suggested that every time you finish a problem, you should go to see where the knowledge points of the problem are and what mistakes you have made, and then do the next problem after sorting it out.

Next, we will introduce the scoring method of Section 3.

Section 3 is presented to us in the form of a discussion. The roles that appear in the discussion are teachers and students. We will hear two basic types, students and teachers, students and students.

Whether it is a dialogue between students and teachers or between students and students, we should make gender and role distinctions.

Because a person’s name and person’s name often appear on the stem of a multiple choice question, the person’s name is often the name of the speaker.

If I find that a boy’s name appears on the question stem and the person asking the question may be a female friend, I can pay more attention to the person who answers the question and increase the probability of answering the question correctly.

If you don’t know whether the name on the stem is male or female, look for a personal pronoun such as hisorher in the options, and use the personal pronoun to determine the gender of the person. In

many questions, people are called their and they, and such people are telling you that you need to choose what the interlocutors agree to after discussing together.

In such questions, we have to be careful of traps. The form of traps is usually that one of the people says a point of view, and the other person disagrees, so it means that this is a wrong point of view. But because we are used to listening and writing when we fill in the blanks, we forget that in the choice questions, besides “hearing” we also need “judgment”.

Therefore, in the process of judgment, we should listen to the following affirmative answers such as “fine, that ‘sit, definitely” after the point of view appears, and then this point of view can be chosen; If the following obvious negation appears, such as the modal verb with not, the information modified by no, and the content of hesitation and correction such as well, actually, infact, etc., it means that the previous point of view is wrong and is a trap.

Let’s move on to the main things we can hear in Section 3. The communication between

teachers and students is based on the feedback and guidance of students’ learning process and homework.

Among them, it is very common for teachers to guide students to write papers.

For example, the teacher will explain to the students the basic format of writing papers, which will involve common words related to papers, such as bibliography, content, dissertation, paragraph, bullet, draft and so on.

Secondly, to write a paper, first of all, we need to have the research results, and have done research and survey in advance, that is, research and survey. When discussing this kind of information, the teacher will introduce you some survey methods and research methods.

For example, the teacher will say that you can conduct an interview, which is what we often call an interview.

You can ask the respondent to come over and ask him face to face.

Or another kind of interview without face to face, telephone interview, telephone interview.

And the last one, questionnaire.

So interviewee, these are the words that often appear in the survey.

And the teacher may want to know the progress of your research.

Let’s pay attention to phrases like study shows and research indicates. The meaning is obvious: research shows.

This means that the key information in the study will appear later, so the answer will often appear later.

So you must make sure that you can hear them when you listen to the questions.

Next, in the study, if you had a problem and asked the teacher for help, the teacher would say words like I recommend you, I advise you, I recommend you, you should.

When the teacher says the above content, it means that he wants to make suggestions, and often these words are followed by answer sentences.

Section 4 Section 4 is the most difficult section in the IELTS listening test. However, it is not the most difficult section. We can still maintain a high accuracy rate in Section 4.

Section 4 is basically fill-in-the-blank questions, and they are all fill-in-the-blank notes, that is, note-type fill-in-the-blank questions. The basic idea of

the IELTS examiner is to ask you to dictate the main information missing from the notes and test whether you can fill in the main information. We have introduced the

first three sections, Section 1 is a dialogue scene, Section 2 is a single statement, Section 3 is a dialogue scene, and Section 4 is a single statement scene.

Accumulate common academic vocabulary. This one-person presentation is different from Section 2.

Section 2 may be a tour guide introducing a scenic spot, or a person speaking at a freshman entrance ceremony.

Section 4 is basically a lecture, that is, lecture scene, dictation, personal presentation and presentation scene. The word “

lecture” does not only refer to a speech, but also to a class.

In some classes, we also need to present a presentation process, which is a person’s introduction to an academic scene.

It seems that the form is not difficult, but you have to pay attention to the fact that an academic scene can be any academic form.

That is to say, we may hear a lot of unfamiliar listening texts in Section 4, which are difficult, but the part it needs to fill in is not the most critical, difficult and professional, but the more general and common academic vocabulary.

When accumulating scene vocabulary, it is enough to accumulate common academic vocabulary in a targeted way. The Difficulty of

Section 4 But after all, Section 4 is the most difficult part of the IELTS listening test. What is its difficulty? Let me introduce you a

little bit.

First of all, the examination time of Section 4 is relatively short.

The first three big questions will give you a pause of tens of seconds in the middle for you to examine the questions.

But Section 4 is from the beginning to the end, so we need to reserve time to examine the topic.

How can we reserve time for examination?

This requires Section 1 to speed up the examination as much as possible.

Because there is nearly two minutes of review time before Section1, we can finish the detailed review of Section1 during this time, so we can leave more time for Section4 to review. When

examining the topic, we should pay attention to its purpose.

Our goal is to find out the location information and predict the answer.

The so-called pre-judgment is pre-judgment. According to the knowledge of grammar and the understanding of the whole sentence and the meaning of the sentence,

we can predict the part of speech of the answer and find the correct answer more quickly and accurately.

Next, let’s talk about the second difficulty.

Another difficulty is the use of language and sentence patterns.

It may use some more professional and written language, which is difficult to understand in an instant, so what should we do?

We can find the correct answer by selecting positioning words and predicting the part of speech.

For example, in the stem of this question, I have heard the positioning of the front.

If I predict that I need to fill in the noun, then the noun after the positioning word appears may be the answer.

In addition, you have to remember that Section 4 will have about five answers, which will give us hints in the form of rereading.

When we hear a word or a phrase stressed, we can predict that it is likely to be the answer. The method of

capturing positioning information has just talked about the problem of examining questions and positioning information. You may ask, how can we find out the positioning information well, quickly and accurately?

First of all, Section 4’s fill-in-the-blank questions are notes, that is, notes.

Note types are bound to have titles.

The title includes both the headline of the whole article and the subtitle of each content. The reason why the

title can become the title is that the speaker will use them to guide the audience’s thinking in the course of teaching, and take his own teaching section.

So what can be written down in the notes must be what the speaker emphasized and the original word said.

So please remember that all the title words can be used as positioning.

Second, when examining the topic, we must not let go of every line.

Because the length of each recording of Section 4 can even reach 8 minutes, such a long time only gives a few sentences on a page, so every sentence given may represent a paragraph in the recording, ignoring the content of any sentence stem, it may lead you to feel that the distance between the topics is too far. Eventually, it leads to positioning errors and writing wrong answers.

Therefore, when examining the topic, no matter whether this sentence is hollowed out or not, we need to select positioning words. What is the best word to use for

positioning information?

Positioning words should have the characteristics of “stability” and “freshness”. For the empty stem, we should use the following types of words to position: the first type is proper nouns.

A proper noun is a word or phrase with a capital letter.

The second category is numerals.

Numerals are just numbers, and this type of information is easy to pick.

Proper nouns and numerals are very stable and will not be replaced by other words in the recording. What about the

rest of the questions?

Please select the noun class information first, because nouns are the most stable among all notional words, and the probability of being replaced is relatively small.

If the sentence in this question is a hollow sentence, in addition to paying attention to proper nouns, numbers and nouns, we should also pay attention to the unprecedented notional words, that is, the notional words closest to the void. Having

said so many notional words, what exactly are notional words?

Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are notional words. The notional words closest

to our emptiness are very useful positioning information.

What if the stem isn’t hollowed out?

You only need to find proper nouns, numerals and nouns to continue to examine the topic.

Answer Prejudgment: Judging the Part of Speech Secondly, we are going to talk about the answer prejudgment of Section 4.

You may have a misconception that the answer prediction is to guess the most likely word to fill in.

Note that anticipation is not to guess a specific word, but to anticipate the part of speech of the question.

There are several most common grammatical structures that can be very effective in predicting the part of speech of answers.

If the space is preceded by a, an, or the, it must be followed by a noun, and a, an must be followed by a noun singular.

However, the plural form of a noun may appear after the, which is easy to make mistakes. If a blank appears directly after the

verb, you also need to fill in the noun.

Ok, what information should we pay attention to in the process of listening to the questions?

First, we must not let go of the positioning information. We must follow the positioning words step by step to find our answers.

At the same time, don’t forget that the linking prompts can help us grasp the structural information of the whole question and the rhythm of the whole question. There are

also conjunctions that indicate coordination, such as and, also, not only, but also. This tells us that the key information that follows may be related to the answer.

And then, inaddition, moreover, furthermore, which means progression, which tells us that he’s going to start talking about a new topic and he needs to start listening to the next stage of information.

As well as information such as however, but, while, and whereas for transitions.

Also note that at the end of the whole passage, it may say finally, lastly, and when we hear it, we should pay attention to the penultimate or penultimate question.

Synonymous substitution, accumulation of synonymous vocabulary, please do not forget the ultimate trick of IELTS listening: synonymous substitution. After the

positioning information or prompt information is confirmed, pay attention to the common Synonyms, and don’t expect to see the same words as you hear.

If you don’t accumulate much at ordinary times and don’t make corresponding associations, you may feel that the positioning words are missing and you can’t find the answer.

So usually after finishing the problem, if the replacement information of this problem is not heard, we need to accumulate constantly to see what the positioning information is replaced by. After

a period of time, you will find that a lot of alternative information will be repeated in different questions, so just remember it in one question, and you can hear it in the next question without pressure.

So what are the types of synonymous substitutions? Now let’s summarize.

The first type is synonym replacement, which is our most common form of replacement, such as easy and simple, build and establish. The second type is the replacement of the same root word, such as clear, clearly and clarity are all from clear, but the part of speech and meaning are not exactly the same. This kind of vocabulary should be consciously recited together when reciting words at ordinary times, which can not only help memory, but also help positioning in listening.

The third type is that negation is changed into affirmation, and affirmation is changed into negation. This kind of substitution is more difficult, and you must memorize it when you meet it. The common ones are notenough and lack, noteasy and difficult. After listening to these two groups of substitutions, I believe you already understand what is the mutual conversion of affirmation and negation. That is to say, the obvious not plus an adjective, the information expressed is similar to the meaning of a single adjective, there will be a situation that we can not hear the negative word but express the negative content, this kind of substitution requires a higher vocabulary. The form of scene replacement in

filling in the blanks is over. I hope you can accumulate the replacement content regularly when you review, which can not only help you learn listening, but also improve your oral expression ability.

When transcribing the answers, don’t forget to check the form of the answers to see if there are any mistakes in writing.

One is to check the spelling of words. It’s a pity to lose points because of simple spelling mistakes.

Secondly, to fill in the air of the verb, we also need to check whether the tense is wrong. When filling in the noun, we can also analyze whether to fill in the plural noun according to the grammatical structure.

As for the examination, I hope you can consciously improve the speed of examination when you practice at ordinary times. According to the method of delimiting words and examining questions, you can practice the regular mode of examining questions and improve the frequency of examining questions. Section4

can be limited to one and a half minutes to complete the review and find the location information.

If you don’t meet the requirements, you have to think about where to drag your feet and solve the problem.

Finally, I would like to tell you that after finishing any question type, no matter choosing or filling in the blanks, you must sum up and see which part of the knowledge is not familiar with. After

summing up, accumulate knowledge points, and then do the exercises to increase the score.
