What kind of reading method can quickly drain all the knowledge of a book and avoid inefficient reading? Let me share with
you a thematic reading method that I have practiced for many years. Not to mention squeezing out a book, it is no problem to squeeze out 10 books a day. The full text is more than 4000 words. The content is very hard-core. You need to concentrate on reading. It is suggested that you first like the collection for reading at any time. What is thematic reading?
Thematic reading can be explained in one sentence: let all the books serve your problems. The first step in
thematic reading is that you must have a question or goal.
That is, we often talk about “problem consciousness.” One: Problem consciousness. What is problem consciousness?
Suppose you want to chase a girl, but you have a lot of competitors. You want to stand out from these competitors and win the heart of the goddess. Alas, there is a problem at this time.
You may ask: How to win the heart of a goddess? How can I stand out
among so many competitors?
How to chat up, interact and connect with the goddess? What and how to talk when you are
with the goddess?
How to date a girl, how to date, where to date?
…… When you have these questions in your mind, you have completed the first step of thematic reading, that is, problem awareness.
At this time, your reading will have a very clear direction, and everything you read will serve the theme of “how to win the heart of the goddess”.
Then why should reading have a strong sense of problem? How terrible is reading
without problem awareness?
Take one thing that almost all of us have experienced: Why is it that after learning from school and entering the society, we find that most of the things we learn are useless?
The reason is simple: because you don’t know why you learned it, where you can use it in the future, and what it has to do with you now, what flowers can you blossom in this situation?
Cognitive psychology has long proved that learning without “problems” is the worst way to learn. This is why exam-oriented education has long been criticized. Once you graduate, it is all returned to the teacher.
However, when you have a clear problem and goal, learning will be completely different at this time.
For example, it is difficult to find a job, and your performance is very poor, and you are facing the fate of being fired immediately. If you want to avoid being fired, you will focus on how to improve your performance. You will concentrate on finding the answer to this question. At this time, your absorption of knowledge is absolutely extraordinary.
Reading is even more so: the effect of reading with and without problem awareness can create a gap between heaven and earth. I have talked about the importance of “problem awareness” above. Then, how to train and master “problem awareness”? Here
I recommend you a thinking model “Golden Circle”, so that you can quickly grasp the “problem awareness”. Before
reading any book, go through the golden circle, that is, what is what, why why, how to do.
For example, in the last book, Influence, we can easily ask a few questions according to the standard of the golden circle?
what: What is influence?
(Know what it is) why: Why exercise influence?
(Know why it’s like this, and what it does, how it relates to you, and what it’s used for you) how: How to exercise influence?
(Know how to master it) This is the most basic way to use the golden circle. Just ask these three questions, and your “problem awareness” will be basically established, but it is not enough. We also need to strengthen the problem awareness. The
so-called strengthening of problem awareness is that when you ask what, why and how, you first try to answer these three questions by yourself. You can imagine yourself as a teacher who is lecturing to students, or an entrepreneur who is explaining financing to investors. At this point, you will find that you may not be able to answer at all, your mind will be blank, or even if you can answer, the answer point will be very sparse, at this time, your curiosity about the subject will rise, you will want to find the answer.
When this “confusion” is rooted in your heart, you can start. At this time, the feeling of reading is like allowing you to take an open-book exam. When we have established “problem awareness” in our minds, how can we start thematic reading?
This brings us to the second module of our thematic reading: building a perceptual understanding of the problem.
Building Perceptual Cognition of a Problem What is building perceptual cognition of a problem?
In a word, have a basic concept or framework for the topic you want to study.
Or the above example, for example, you want to chase girls, but you have no experience in this area, then you need to have a basic understanding of “chasing girls”.
For example, what are the processes and precautions for chasing girls, such as: how to know girls first, WeChat, chat up, interact, date and so on.
So how to establish a basic understanding of the matter of “chasing girls”?
The simplest way is to go to the major platforms to search directly, looking for strategies and so on, or to find a basic literacy book first, there are too many such introductory books on the market.
PS: The following pictures are only for demonstration. I don’t have any in-depth understanding of this field. In this way, you can have a certain understanding of “chasing girls” by simply walking around.
With this basic concept, your “problem awareness” will be more targeted and directional. At
the end of this step, you have just found the door, not even the door. After this step fills your mind with targeted questions, we need to conduct “in-depth research” and start slowly on the road to the master.
Three: In-depth study, then how to study in depth? When
we looked at the Three Kingdoms, there was a time when Cao Cao struggled to kill Liu Bei. What did he do at this time?
Boss Cao gathered all the counsellors who could answer his questions ~ ~ ~ In the same way, when we solve problems, we should first gather all our “counsellors” ~ ① Find the subject materials: exhaust the information sources and find the materials according to the questions we have set up before: whether it is books, videos, courses, papers, or experienced people. As long as it is everything about this subject, we should try our best to dabble in it. The masters and authoritative scholars in
this field are all our “advisers and counsellors” to solve problems. Let them serve our problems, and we should also be a boss Cao. However, it should be noted that life is short, and everyone’s time and energy are very limited. We don’t need to touch some garbage. What we are aiming at here is classics. We have to exhaust the high-value things, so how to find the classics? To
this point, we told you in the previous article “Four Steps, How to Choose a Valuable Book?”? It
has already been introduced, so I won’t repeat it here. If you haven’t read this article, you can click on it later.
When you have found the classic book on the topic, you can start to read the topic, so how to do it?
It’s the reading methodology we mentioned earlier, but this time we use them all together, four levels of reading.
(2) Use the four reading levels together 1: Quickly read the book, integrate all the reading methodologies mentioned in the previous article, take the theme as the unit, and begin to serve the “purpose”. Use the four levels together, you have me, I have you. When you integrate
them, you will enter the highest realm of reading.
This also explains why some experts can read hundreds of books a year, and they don’t have more time or eyes than you.
The main reason is that their reading is to serve a “specific problem”, reading 3-5 books at the same time, and even some experts read dozens of books at the same time. You also need to frame what you read and keep it close to the topic.
2: Build a framework We talked about the golden circle earlier, and through the nesting of the golden circle, you can easily build a complete framework on the topic.
Let’s take the book “Influence” mentioned above as an example. Students who have read the book all know that there are many principles under “Influence” defined by the author, such as “authority, reciprocity, scarcity, commitment and consistency, preference, and so on.” Then we can take out these principles at will, nest them in golden circles again, and pursue them layer by layer.
For example, take out the principle of “reciprocity” and nest it in a golden circle ~ what: What is reciprocity?
Why: Why does reciprocity affect people?
Why should we learn the principle of reciprocity?
…… ? How: How to apply this principle? What
are the application scenarios? In this way, through the nesting of the golden circle, you keep staring at a certain question of a certain module and continue to ask questions. Unconsciously, you take down the framework of the question.
When you have established the framework through the above mentioned, what should you do next?
At this time, we need to re-integrate and reorganize the multiple knowledge frameworks we have been exposed to.
The fragmentary information obtained is sorted out in a more logical framework and put into their own knowledge system.
(3) Organize the framework, such as the framework of influence in the figure above, so that we can incorporate it into our existing framework and into your existing knowledge system. After
the above steps, you can basically solve your original problem, but if you want to have a better understanding and insight into the problem, you need to do the next step of research.
④ Keep going deeper: Know what it is, and know why it is. If you still want to chase a girl, the book tells you that if you want to send flowers to a girl, you should be able to coax her. You can’t just know this. You also need to know why you want to send flowers, when you want to send them, and how you want to send them.. Otherwise, if you do it rashly and flatter your hooves, you will be happy.
In the process of reading, if you still want to understand the problem more deeply, you should not simply accept the plan given by the author, but keep asking questions until you understand what, why and how. For example, if you are curious about “the matter of men and women”, then you can follow the question all the way down. To sociology, to anthropology, to the evolutionary theory of biology, to history, culture, philosophy.. You exhaust, refine and sublimate all the explanations about this problem until you dig out the lowest principles.
When you get involved deeply enough, congratulations, you have achieved great success. ⑤ Analytical reading in thematic reading: cross-reading to verify the framework. In the process of thematic reading, we must not trust the words of one school. We should carry out the “critical thinking” mentioned in the previous article throughout the whole reading process.
For the same topic, when you go deep enough, you will often find that, in fact, the masters are also tit for tat, conflict with each other, find a completely different perspective of the discussion, put them together, you will have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the topic.
Therefore, at any stage of reading, we should have a strong sense of criticism and criticism. We criticize the master through the master, the master verifies the master, the master perfects the master, and let the master help us build and perfect our knowledge system.
OK, at this point, if you have gone through the above steps on a certain topic, congratulations, you are already a semi-expert, and we still need to go through the final steps to become an “expert” on that topic.
Four: Use works to improve the framework: Theme awareness Yes, the last step is to write a high standard paper on the topic of your research, or publish a book, make a course to teach others, to form and improve their own theory.
This process will rebuild your knowledge of the topic, will make you have a strong sense of the system, you have no goods in your stomach, at this time a test will know.
When you have successfully exported your work and have been recognized by others and major players in the field, congratulations, you have become an authority in the field.
But in any case, almost all knowledge needs to fall to the ground, to practice repeatedly and deliberately, to practice the knowledge you have learned in line with the actual situation, to guide practice with theory, and to feed back theory with practice, which is the road.
